Love this reel! So small which was exactly what I was looking for. I use this for surf perch and schoolie sized stripers on the west coast. Glad I got the smallest one because getting spoiled is not an issue with my local fish.
It feels so good in the hand that when my wife picked it up and gave it a few spins she looked at me and “this was expensive, wasn’t it?’. Busted, lol.

Absolutely love this reel! I recently put it to the test on a couple big South Texas Redfish, some solid Black Drum, and a bunch of trout. Then took it 19 miles offshore the same weekend and landed a limit of snapper in 125’ of water.
The 25 lbs of drag flat out man handles fish. I was able to pull the red & black drum away from structure while fishing canals. Winched the snapper straight up to the boat avoiding sharks.
I’ll be honest, I splurged on this setup, pairing it with a Bull Bay TAC-X and Daiwa Expedition 49lb (same diameter as 20lb braid) It’s easily the nicest rod and reel I’ve ever owned, and after putting it to work, I can confidently say it’s worth every penny. The reel feels incredibly solid, and smooth. Just a beautiful piece of equipment all around, and it’s made in the USA!
Ps: I let my brother-in-law try it out one night and he lands his personal best! A 28” trout!

This is my 5th VR. These are my go to reels for the boat and what I hand my clients. I need to know that my gear is going to work even after being abused by fish and fishermen. Van Staal gives me that peace of mind, and allows me to focus on fishing versus fishing gear. If you are looking to eliminate a variable, pick up a VR.
